Soft Washing vs. Pressure Washing: What's the Difference?

People use "pressure washing" as a catch-all term, but pressure washing and soft washing are genuinely different techniques — and using the wrong one on the wrong surface can cause real damage.

What Is Pressure Washing?

Pressure washing relies on high-pressure water alone to blast away dirt, grime, and stains. It's the right call for hard, non-porous surfaces that can handle the force — concrete driveways, sidewalks, pavers, and some deck materials.

What Is Soft Washing?

Soft washing uses much lower pressure combined with a cleaning solution that does the actual work of breaking down algae, mold, and mildew. Because it doesn't depend on force, it's the safer choice for anything that could be damaged by high pressure — siding, stucco, painted surfaces, and roofing.

Which One Do You Need?

• Driveways, sidewalks, concrete patios, pavers — pressure washing
• Vinyl or painted siding, stucco — soft washing
• Asphalt shingle roofs — soft washing only (high pressure can strip granules and void manufacturer warranties)
• Decks and fences — usually a gentler, controlled pressure, depending on the wood or material
